Virtual Call Answering Service: Human vs AI, Prices Compared for 2026
- Callers punish unanswered calls: in CallRail's 2025 survey of 1,000 US consumers, 78% had abandoned a business after an unanswered call and 82% said they would call a competitor 1.
- Human answering services worked out at about $1.75 to $5.00 per included minute on their entry plans, with overage of $2.29 to $2.99 a minute on those plans 2,3,4,5,6,7.
- AI receptionists worked out at about $0.20 to $0.50 per included minute on entry plans, with overage from $0.25 a minute 8,9,10.
- Answering service operators in the US earn a median $38,630 a year, about the same as receptionists at $38,010, which is why live answering is priced per minute rather than per hour 11,12.
- Most human services include appointment booking or sell it as an add-on; check whether the AI option books into your own calendar [2, 3, 4].
A virtual call answering service answers your business phone when you can't, takes messages, books appointments and passes on urgent calls. It can be a team of people working remotely, an AI receptionist, or both. This page compares what human answering services and AI receptionists charged on 29 October 2026, what callers do when nobody answers, and how to choose.

What a virtual call answering service does
A virtual answering service picks up calls you would otherwise miss: after hours, when everyone is busy, or all the time. It greets callers in your business name, answers common questions, takes messages, books appointments, and transfers or alerts you about urgent calls. The difference between providers is who answers. Human services use remote receptionists and charge per minute or per call. AI receptionists answer with a voice agent and charge far less per minute. Some providers now offer both.
What callers do when nobody answers
CallRail surveyed 1,000 US consumers for a report published in September 2025. 78% said they had abandoned a business after an unanswered call, 42% said they leave a voicemail, 24% turn to online chat, 21% immediately call another business, and 82% said they would call a competitor if a business did not answer 1. CallRail sells call tracking, so it has an interest in the problem, but these are its own survey results.
Calls still matter: in Hiya's 2025 survey of more than 12,000 consumers in six countries, 42% preferred voice when dealing with healthcare providers, up from 33% a year earlier, and three times as many preferred voice as text with retail businesses 13. Invoca's customer data found 26% of calls from potential customers went unanswered and only 2% of those callers left a voicemail 14.

Human answering versus AI receptionist, per minute
Dividing each entry plan's price by its included minutes gives a rough cost per minute if you use the full allowance. These are our calculations from listed prices.
Human services include people; AI receptionists answer with a voice agent. Not like for like, and real costs depend on how much of the allowance you use.
How to choose
Human services are better for complex, sensitive or high-value calls where empathy and judgement matter, and for businesses that want no setup. AI receptionists are better for volume, after-hours coverage and cost, and they answer instantly every time. Many businesses use AI for first answer and booking, and transfer the calls that need a person.
| Rule | Human answering service | AI receptionist |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per minute | $1.75 to $5.00 on entry plans | $0.20 to $0.50 on entry plans |
| Answers every call at once, 24/7 | Depends on staffing and plan | No queue, any hour |
| Sensitive or complex callers | A trained person handles it | Should transfer to a person |
| Books into your calendar | Most plans include it | Check it books, not just texts a link |
| Also answers chat and WhatsApp | Some sell live chat separately | Platforms such as Convocore do both |
Our reading of the providers' pages.
- Count your missed calls and when they happen before you buy.
- Price each option at your real monthly minutes, including overage.
- Make sure urgent calls reach a person and callers are told when they speak to an AI.
- Call each shortlisted service with your most common questions.
Where Convocore fits
Convocore is an AI agent platform, not a staffed answering service. On the Business plan ($99 a month, 2 phone numbers, 3 calls at once) an AI agent answers your phone, books appointments, sends follow-up texts, transfers calls to a person, and the same agent answers website chat, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. Voice is billed at a $0.02 a minute platform fee plus the voice and phone providers' costs at cost.
Agencies and answering service businesses can resell it under their own brand on the White Label plan, using AI for first answer and their own staff for transfers.
What the evidence does not show
- Prices change often; everything here is as listed on 29 October 2026, and some pages do not show overage, trials or booking.
- Per-minute figures are our divisions of listed prices and assume the full allowance is used.
- We did not test call quality, wait times or booking accuracy for any provider.
- CallRail and Invoca sell call products, and the CallRail figures are self reported 1,14.
- Moneypenny US's page does not say which of its plans are human and which are AI 5.
Choosing a virtual call answering service
If most of your calls are routine questions and bookings, an AI receptionist answers them for a fraction of the per-minute price of a human service. If your calls are complex or sensitive, a human service, or AI with fast transfer to a person, is worth the extra cost.
Either way, start by counting the calls you miss, price the options at your real volume, and call each one before you sign.
Method and limits
- Every price was read on the provider's own pricing page on 29 October 2026.
- Providers were chosen because they appear for virtual answering searches or compete for the same calls; the list is not exhaustive.
- Convocore's prices and limits are read from the pricing catalog that powers /pricing.
- Convocore sells an AI agent platform that competes with these services, so it has a commercial interest in this comparison. If you find an error, write to support@convocore.ai and we will correct it.

Questions
What is a virtual call answering service?
A service that answers your business phone when you can't, in your business name. It takes messages, answers common questions, books appointments and passes on urgent calls. It can be remote human receptionists, an AI receptionist, or both.
How much does an answering service typically cost?
On 29 October 2026, entry plans of human answering services ran from $99 a month for 50 minutes (PATLive) to $350 for 200 minutes (AnswerConnect), about $1.75 to $5.00 per included minute, with overage of $2.29 to $2.99 a minute on those plans. AI receptionists ran about $0.20 to $0.50 per included minute.
What does a virtual receptionist do?
Answers calls in your company name, screens and transfers them, takes messages, books appointments, answers common questions and sends you a summary. Many also handle after-hours and overflow calls.
Is there a free AI phone receptionist?
Smith.ai's AI receptionist has a free tier with 25 calls, and several AI receptionists offer trials of 7 to 14 days. Convocore's free plan lets you build and test an agent; phone answering starts on the Business plan.
Is an AI answering service as good as a human one?
For routine calls, bookings and after hours, an AI receptionist answers instantly at a much lower price per minute. For complex, emotional or high-value calls, a person is still better, so the best setups have the AI transfer those calls.
Can an answering service book appointments?
Most can. PATLive and AnswerConnect include booking on their plans, Davinci includes it on Premium plans, and Smith.ai sells it as an add-on. With an AI receptionist, check that it books into your own calendar rather than texting a link.
