Contractors lose jobs on the phone: the owner is on a roof, the crew is short-handed, and the homeowner calls the next company on the list. This page collects the evidence on how construction and home service businesses answer calls, how homeowners choose a contractor, what construction answering services and AI receptionists charged on 29 October 2026, and how to set one up.

Why construction calls go unanswered
The US had 953,703 private construction establishments in the first quarter of 2026 and about 8.4 million construction employees in September 2026, with 234,000 job openings in August, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics 1. Most are small firms where the person who answers the phone is also the person on site.
Staffing makes it harder. The Associated General Contractors and NCCER surveyed 1,342 firms in 2025: 88% of firms that employ craft workers had openings, 45% had project delays caused by worker shortages, and 78% had at least one delayed project 2. A crew lead who is short-handed does not stop to take a sales call.
How homeowners choose a contractor
Service Direct, a lead generation company, surveyed 559 US homeowners in 2022. 85% contacted three or fewer contractors, 60% made a decision within 72 hours, 64% said answering the first call matters, and almost 40% said they rarely or never use a contractor who missed their first call 4.
Invoca's 2026 home services benchmark found a person answered 52% of inbound calls overall, rising to 73% for calls longer than 30 seconds; 38% of answered calls were leads and 45% of those leads converted on the call 3. CallRail's 2025 survey of 1,000 US consumers adds that 78% have abandoned a business after an unanswered call and 21% immediately call another business 5.

What to set up
Give the service your service area, the jobs you take and the ones you do not, your hours and what counts as an emergency (no heat, a leak, storm damage). Decide whether it books estimates directly or schedules a call back, and make sure urgent calls reach the on-call person by transfer or text.
| Rule | AI inside your job software | Standalone AI (Convocore and others) | Human service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Books into your job software | Native | Through calendar, sheets or webhooks | Some, such as PATLive with Jobber |
| Price per month | From $29 add-on | Low per minute | Per minute or per call |
| Also answers website chat and Facebook | Usually phone and text | One agent across channels | Chat sold separately |
| Upset or complex callers | Transfer to a person | Transfer to a person | A person handles it |

Where Convocore fits
On Convocore's Business plan ($99 a month) one AI agent answers your phone around the clock, asks the right questions for each job type, books estimates into Google Calendar or Outlook, logs the lead to a sheet or your CRM by webhook, texts the on-call technician for emergencies, and answers website chat, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp too. Agencies serving contractors can resell it under their own brand on the White Label plan. If you run your business in Jobber or ServiceTitan and only need phone answering, their built-in AI add-ons connect more directly.
What the evidence does not show
- Invoca's construction-specific numbers appear only in charts we could not read, so we use its home services totals 3.
- The homeowner survey is from 2022 and was run by a lead generation vendor 4.
- We found no independent study of missed call rates for construction firms specifically.
- We did not test any provider's call handling or job software integration.
Choosing a construction answering service
Look at a month of calls: how many you missed, when, and which were new jobs. If you live in Jobber or ServiceTitan and only need phones answered, try their AI add-on first. If you want one agent on the phone, website and Facebook, or you are an agency serving contractors, a platform such as Convocore covers more channels at a flat price.
