How many calls arrive after hours
NextPhone, which sells an AI receptionist, published call data in October 2026 showing 14.1% of small business calls arrived after hours: 7.4% at weekends and 6.6% on weekday evenings and early mornings. Those calls turned into a lead or booking 23.6% of the time against 18.6% during business hours, and produced 17.2% of all leads 1. The data covers AI-answered calls, mostly law, home services and local services.
The figure varies a lot by business. For emergency trades and healthcare the share is higher, for offices that close at five it is lower. Count your own calls by hour before choosing coverage.

What callers with urgent problems do
HomeServe's 2025 State of the Home survey of 2,524 US adults found more than 8 in 10 homeowners had a home repair emergency in the past year, most often heating or cooling (30%), appliances (29%) and blocked or overflowing toilets (26%). Only 31% found it very easy to find a professional in an emergency 2.
Housecall Pro's 2026 survey of more than 1,100 US homeowners found 72% would pay more to have an emergency fixed within 24 hours, and 58% contact a professional straight after a sudden failure 3. The business that answers first at 9pm usually gets the job.
Missed calls rarely come back
CallRail's January 2025 benchmark of 1.1 million conversations found missed call rates of 32% in healthcare, 28% in legal, 14% in home services and 9% in real estate, and reported that up to 85% of callers whose call is not answered do not call back 4. Invoca's 2026 home services report found 52% of inbound calls reached a person, with answer rates from 32% to 74% across trades 10.

How to set up after hours answering
Decide what counts as urgent first. A plumber's burst pipe, a patient in pain or a tenant locked out need a person within minutes; a quote request can wait for the morning if the caller gets a booked call back. Then forward your line after hours to the service, give it your calendar and on-call rota, and test it with a late night call yourself.
Our recommended flow.
Where Convocore fits
On Convocore's Business plan ($99 a month) an AI agent answers your line around the clock, follows your rules for what is urgent, transfers urgent calls or texts the on-call person, books routine jobs into Google Calendar, Outlook or Calendly, and answers website chat, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger at the same time. Voice is a $0.02 a minute platform fee plus the voice and phone providers' costs, the same at 2am as 2pm. Agencies can resell it to clients on the White Label plan.
What the evidence does not show
- The after hours call share and conversion come from one AI receptionist vendor and cover AI-answered calls; the same vendor published a different share (28.5%) using a different definition of business hours, so the figure depends on how hours are defined 1.
- The emergency surveys cover homeowners, not every kind of business 2,3.
- CallRail and Invoca sell call products, and the figures reach us through a press release and a report summary 4,10.
- We did not test any provider's after hours call handling.
Choosing after hours coverage
Pull a month of call logs and count the calls that arrive when you are closed. If they are mostly urgent, choose a service that reaches your on-call person fast. If they are mostly enquiries, an AI receptionist that books into your calendar covers them for far less per minute.
Method and limits
- Statistics come from pages we opened on 29 October 2026; vendor data is labelled with its sample.
- Prices were read on each provider's own page on 29 October 2026.
- Convocore's prices come from the pricing catalog. Convocore sells an AI agent platform, so it has a commercial interest. If you find an error, write to support@convocore.ai.
