Plumbing Answering Service: Missed Call Data, Triage and Providers Compared (2026)

The short version
  • The US had 510,600 plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters in 2025; BLS says plumbers are often on call for emergencies and that evening and weekend work is common 1.
  • Only 52% of inbound home service calls reach a person, and across segments the rate ranged from 32% to 74% 3.
  • Calling back is weak: 86% of consumers do not answer unknown numbers and only 14% pick up immediately, according to Hiya figures cited by CallRail 4.
  • Homeowners decide quickly: in a 2022 survey of 559 homeowners, 85% contacted three or fewer contractors, 60% decided within 72 hours, and nearly 40% rarely or never use a contractor who missed their first call 2.
  • Prices we could read ranged from a $29 a month add-on in Jobber to $2,100 a month for a human service [9, 13].

A plumber's phone rings hardest when a pipe has burst, and the person calling will not wait long or answer an unknown number when you ring back. This page collects the evidence on how many home service calls are answered, how callers behave when they get voicemail, how to triage plumbing emergencies, and what answering services charged on 3 November 2026.

Plumbing is an on-call trade

The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 510,600 plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters in 2025 with a median pay of $63,800 and projects 7% growth to 2035. It says plumbers are often on call for emergencies and that evening and weekend work is common 1. The count includes pipefitters and steamfitters, so it overstates residential plumbers.

The work that cannot wait, such as a burst pipe or a flooded basement, arrives when the plumber is already under a sink.

How many calls get answered

Invoca's 2026 home services benchmark found a person answered 52% of inbound calls, 65% of calls longer than 15 seconds and 73% of those longer than 30 seconds, with segment answer rates from 32% to 74%. 38% of answered calls were leads and 45% of leads converted on the call 3. Plumbing's own value is only in the report's charts, so we use the home services totals. Invoca sells call analytics.

Service Direct, which sells leads to contractors, reported that 26% of calls to its own contractors went unanswered, in a 2022 report 2.

Callers do not wait, and will not pick up when you call back

In Service Direct's 2022 survey of 559 homeowners, 85% contacted three or fewer contractors, 60% decided within 72 hours, and nearly 40% rarely or never use a contractor who did not answer the first call; about one in six leave a callback message 2. The survey covers general contractors, not only plumbers.

Returning the call is unreliable too. CallRail, citing Hiya, reports that 86% of consumers do not answer unknown numbers, 14% pick up immediately and 41% wait for a voicemail 4. CallRail sells call tracking, and the article does not give a sample size. Our reading: a missed call is often a lost call.

Triage a plumbing call

We found no trade body script for plumbing triage, so the split below is ours. It borrows two published ideas: property managers treat a major leak or flooding as an emergency 5, and for fire or a suspected gas leak the first step is calling 911 6. A gas smell is a safety call, not a plumbing booking.

Where Convocore fits

On Convocore's Business plan ($99 a month, plus a $0.02 a minute voice fee and providers at cost) one AI agent answers your phone and website chat, asks the questions you set (what is leaking, where, is water still running), books into Google Calendar, Outlook or Calendly, texts your on-call plumber for the emergencies you define, and sends each job to your software by webhook 20. It does not connect directly to ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro, and a transfer is a plain call forward. If you want jobs created straight in your software, compare those tools' own AI add-ons.

What the evidence does not show

  • Plumbing-specific answer rates are only in Invoca's charts, so we use home services totals 3.
  • The homeowner survey is from 2022 and covers general contractors 2.
  • The Hiya figures are secondhand through CallRail with no sample size 4.
  • We found no primary data on how many plumbing calls are emergencies, and no trade body triage script.
  • We did not test any provider's call handling or integrations.

Choosing an answering service for a plumbing business

Write your emergency list and who is on call. If you live in Jobber, Housecall Pro or ServiceTitan, try their own AI add-on first. If you want one agent on the phone and website chat at a flat price with your own rules, a platform such as Convocore fits. Whichever you pick, make sure a caller who cannot reach you is never sent to voicemail.

Method and limits

  • Figures come from pages opened on 3 November 2026; vendor surveys are labelled with what the vendor sells; snippet-only figures are left out.
  • Convocore's prices come from the pricing catalog. Convocore sells an AI agent platform, so it has a commercial interest. If you find an error, write to support@convocore.ai.

Questions

What is a plumbing answering service?

A service that answers a plumber's phone when the team is on jobs or off shift. It takes job details, books service and sends emergencies such as burst pipes to the on-call plumber, using human operators or an AI receptionist.

How much does a plumbing answering service cost?

On 3 November 2026 Jobber's AI receptionist was a $29 a month add-on, Goodcall started at $79, Sameday AI at $449, and human services ran from $49 pay as you go (PATLive) to $2,100 a month (Smith.ai Pro).

Is an answering service worth it for plumbers?

Usually, if you miss calls. Only 52% of home service calls reach a person in one benchmark, and in a 2022 survey nearly 40% of homeowners rarely or never use a contractor who misses the first call.

Why not just call missed callers back?

Because many will not pick up: 86% of consumers do not answer unknown numbers and only 14% pick up immediately, according to figures CallRail cites from Hiya.

What plumbing calls are emergencies?

Typically a burst pipe, flooding or a sewage backup. A gas smell, fire or an electrical hazard should go to 911 first. Write your own list and who handles each.

Can an AI receptionist book into ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro?

Their own AI add-ons do. Other AI receptionists, including Convocore, usually book into a calendar or send the job by webhook.
